Privacy policy
Effective 16 October 2026
ShawNotch is a Mac app made by an independent developer based in Jordan ("I" or "me"). This policy explains what the app and this website do with information about you. In short: the app works on your Mac, collects nothing about you, and only goes online to check your licence and look for updates.
What the app uses, and where it stays
ShawNotch shows things from your Mac in the notch. It reads them on your Mac, uses them there, and doesn't send them anywhere or keep copies, except as listed here.
- What's playing. The song, artist, album, cover and playing state that macOS shares through Now Playing. For Spotify, ShawNotch also reads and changes shuffle and repeat; macOS asks you first. For songs played from files on your Mac, ShawNotch may look up the song's file with Spotlight to show its cover; macOS asks before it can look in your Desktop, Documents or Downloads folders.
- Camera. Only on while the Mirror is open. Frames are checked on your Mac for lighting and framing, then discarded. A photo is saved, to a ShawNotch folder in your Pictures folder, only when you press Snap.
- Calendar. Today's events, to show them in the notch, and events you add with quick add, which are saved to your calendar. macOS asks before ShawNotch can use your calendars.
- Files. Files you drop on the notch are listed in the tray until you quit; ShawNotch keeps references to them, not copies. The Downloads and Recent lists show files already on your Mac.
- Volume and AirPods battery. Read from macOS to show in the notch.
- Music Mode. While it's on, ShawNotch changes macOS's icon, widget and folder colour setting, and puts yours back when you switch it off or quit.
- Settings. Your choices, such as which widgets are on, are saved on your Mac.
What goes online
- Your licence. When you enter a licence key, and from time to time after that, ShawNotch checks it with Lemon Squeezy. The check sends the key and a random identifier ShawNotch creates for your Mac (not its name or serial number), so that a licence can be limited to 3 Macs.
- Updates. ShawNotch asks this website whether a newer version exists. Like any web request, this shows the website your IP address and the app's version.
- Nothing else. ShawNotch has no analytics, advertising, tracking or crash reporting of its own. If you've chosen in macOS's settings to share crash reports with app developers, Apple may pass ShawNotch's crash reports on to me under Apple's terms.
Buying ShawNotch
Orders are handled by Lemon Squeezy, our reseller and merchant of record. Lemon Squeezy collects your name, email address, billing details, payment information and IP address to take payment, charge the right tax and prevent fraud, and its privacy policy covers that. I receive your name, email address, country and order details, and use them only to provide your licence, help you when you ask, and meet tax and legal obligations. I never see your full card details.
This website
This website is hosted on GitHub Pages. GitHub may record visitors' IP addresses for security; see GitHub's privacy statement. The website sets no cookies and uses no analytics or trackers, and its fonts are served from this site rather than a font service. The Mirror demo on the home page shows your camera only if you click Use my camera: the picture stays in your browser, nothing is recorded or sent anywhere, and the camera turns off when the mirror closes.
Emails
If you email me, I use your message and email address to reply, and keep them for as long as I need to help you.
Children
ShawNotch isn't aimed at children and collects no personal data from anyone who uses it. Purchases are made through Lemon Squeezy under its own terms, including its age requirements.
Your rights
You can ask me what information I hold about you (your order details and our emails), ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it, by emailing support@shawnotch.com. I'll reply within 30 days. Some order records have to be kept for tax reasons, and Lemon Squeezy keeps its own records as the law requires. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.
Changes
If this policy changes, I'll update this page and the date at the top.
